Supercells near the triple point in SE South Dakota (Yankton/Sioux Falls Area)

Summary: Nice supercell near Yankton, SD which produced several funnels and softball sized hail.

Targeted the warm front, dryline, cold front triple point near Yankton, SD. Left Omaha with Christy, Craig, Anton and CJ at 3:45. Had to leave 2 others behind due to lack of vehicles. Environment consisted of temps around 80F with dewpoints of 55-60 in the warm sector. Upper level winds were a little weak for good supercells with speeds of only 40-50 knots from 500-250 mb. In addition there was very little shear from 850-500 mb. However the low levels near the warm front exhibited strong backing with surface winds out of the East at 20 knots and from the South at 30 knots at 850 mb. This resulted in sufficient storm relative helicity of 200-400 m2/s2 in the target area.

Traveled with Derrick Herndon and the Weather Explorers Post #999 out of Bellevue, NE.Left Bellevue/Omaha at 11:00pm on a course to view existing storms that were still moving through eastern SD/IA Border area. Viewed these storms just north of Sioux City on I-29 before continuing west through Vermillion and Yankton SD. We jogged south on Hwy 281, and ended up in Oneill, NE at ~5:00pm. Upon looking for a Library for updates, we noticed the first towers emerging in a moisture convergence region. The cap was broken! We folllowed these towers as they became a classic isolated supercell. Was able to confirm one brief touchdown in photos after enhancing.

April 24 2007 Chase down to SouthWest/Central Kansas. Chasing the dryline.. a few weak supercells developed but did not move away from the dryline into a better environment. As a result, just a couple weak tornado touchdowns reported on far southern storm.
